Chapter 13

THE CONCLUSION

Having the Last Word

Begin at the beginning . . .

and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

—Lewis Carroll

Remember the speaker who suddenly, out of nowhere, uttered an abrupt “Thank you” and left the stage with the speed of a frightened rabbit? Or the times we were forced to listen to a speaker’s “final remarks” endlessly summarizing his point. Why is concluding such a problem?

The lack of understanding about how to say good-bye when speaking in public is curious. After all, most people know perfectly well how to conclude a business letter or telephone call. The explanation lies in the unfamiliarity of the public speaking situation. This seems to trigger a kind of passivity or paralysis on the part of the speaker, making him unable to initiate an ending. Knowing the rules about how to conclude will help to make a strong exit.

What Is A Conclusion Anyway?

The purpose of the conclusion is to prepare the audience for your departure, just as the introduction to your talk gives the audience the opportunity to meet you. In the TalkPower model, the conclusion contains a brief review of your main points and the repetition of your Message Sentence.

This is all you need for your audience to experience a sense of closure. If you do this skillfully, you will impress your audience with your authority. Let us see if we can streamline the conclusion so that it has the same impact and “verbal graphics” value as the rest of your presentation.
