Robbie stumbled out of Mr. Renner’s house. The cold air brushed against his face as his stomach roiled over. Day had turned into evening. Two police cars pulled up with flashing red and blue lights. Someone must have called the police. Maybe one of the club members. Robbie fell to his knees and threw up on Mr. Renner’s lawn. He heaved and heaved until his stomach felt empty.

A police officer rushed up to Robbie. “You all right, son? Are you hurt?”

Robbie did his best to nod but that just made him nauseous again. “I’m okay, I … think.”

“It’s Officer Parish. Remember me, Robbie?”

“Yes.”

“What happened here?”

“Um.” Robbie tried to get up on his own, but he was weak and the officer helped him to his feet. “Mr. Renner … attacked me.”

“Mr. Renner? The principal of Durham School?”

Robbie blinked as tears filled his eyes. “I think I … he might be dead.”

Officer Parish narrowed his eyes. “You’re saying Mr. Renner is dead in his house?”

Robbie licked his dry lips. “He might be.”

“Here, son, take it easy now. Sit down on the sidewalk and catch your breath. I’m going inside to check things out.” He called over his shoulder to another officer. “With me inside, García.”

Robbie wiped tears from his face. “In the bedroom. Look, you’ll see …”

Officer Parish nodded and the two officers stepped into Mr. Renner’s house. Robbie hugged himself as he worried what was going to happen when they found Mr. Renner’s body. Will I have to go to jail? What will my parents and classmates think? Will my parents lose their jobs for having a son who stabbed the ex-principal with a fire poker?

Robbie started to rock back and forth on the cold sidewalk. He began to crack his knuckles really hard. He was beyond scared.

It seemed like forever until the officers finally exited Mr. Renner’s house, concern lining their features. Robbie stood, trembling, and walked toward them.

“It’s bad, right?” Robbie blurted, pushing his hair back from his face. “It’s so bad. I’m really sorry. He was out of his mind. He just wouldn’t stop coming at me. I can’t really explain it but—”

The officer shook his head and lifted a hand for Robbie to stop. “Robbie, calm down. It’s okay.”

Robbie’s eyes widened. “What’s okay?”

“You said Mr. Renner’s dead, is that right?”

Robbie nodded and swallowed hard.

“Well, unless the principal uses motor oil for blood, I don’t think he’s dead. There’s no one inside.”

Robbie finally looked down at his dirty clothes and hands. “Oil?”

“Yep, I don’t know what you were doing in Mr. Renner’s house alone, but no one’s inside. Alive or dead.”
