The End

FOUR

THE TALE OF BIZZY-BETH THE NOSY BEE

The day after Minty fell and broke his foot, Mrs. Nimbly Knock told her little squirrels that she would take them to visit him. When Hopscotch heard this, his face fell, for he thought that Minty would be upset with him. He had not stopped thinking about how he had pushed the hammock hard and how Minty had fallen and got hurt. Hopscotch wished that he could take back the moment and still felt badly for being so rough in his play. His mother saw his sad eyes and long face. ‘What’s wrong, my dear?’ she asked Hopscotch.

Quickskip and Chuckles looked at their brother anxiously, for he had not been himself since Minty’s fall.

‘Minty might be mad at me, Mom. I caused him to fall and break his foot,’ whispered Hopscotch after a long while.

‘Oh, I don’t think Minty will be mad at you, dear. In fact, his mother told me to bring all of you to see him today,’ replied Mrs. Nimbly Knock.

Hopscotch’s eyes grew wide in surprise, and his brothers looked at Mrs. Nimbly Knock in puzzlement. They too had thought that Minty would be upset.

‘Really, Mom?’ asked Hopscotch.

‘Yes, Hopscotch. I’m sure that Minty will be quite bored sitting in bed all day. He’ll be happy to see his friends. Don’t worry, my dear. When you see Minty later, tell him how sorry you are about the accident,’ she said.

Hopscotch felt much better. Before, his heart had grown heavy every time he thought of Minty. He worried that his little friend would not talk to him again. Knowing that Minty was angry with him would be worse than the punishment his mother had given him, which was that he had to stay indoors for three weeks.

The punishment had begun that morning. Quickskip and Chuckles had gone outside to play without him, but they had found their games quite dull. Hopscotch was, after all, the adventurer and made all their games fun. After they all returned home from the deep forest, the two little squirrels had tried to make some fun for a short while out on Honey Nut Bough, but they gave that up too and came inside, for they missed Hopscotch. They stayed indoors with him and played quietly with their smart snails, and then they all did some light chores for their mother.

She was pleased for their help. Together they baked three sweet pastry pies filled with chunky ripe plums and nuts. It was the first time that the little squirrels had helped with the baking. Much to their delight, their mother let them decorate the edges of the sweet pies with their claw prints and then sprinkle the tops with brown sugar. It was after they had eaten one of the delicious pies that she told them about the visit to Minty’s. ‘Well now, I think we picked some lovely fruit this morning. Let’s make some gift baskets for Minty and his family,’ suggested Mrs. Nimbly Knock.

Hopscotch felt very happy to do this for his friend.
