ELEVEN

Mason Cooper leaned over his desk and flipped open his diary to the calendar. Using the end of his pen he counted out the Mondays left before Wednesday the 3rd of May. Just as he thought, there were only three more to go. Which meant he had just three weeks and two days to wrap up the Simpson case. So that meant he had three weeks and two days to find Darren Pitt. Because arresting him and slamming the cell door would be closure as far as he was concerned. The forensic evidence was overwhelming, and together with Miss Simpson’s evidence even an inexperienced detective would be able to get a satisfactory result, especially under the supervision of Detective Inspector Don Whitehead. So Mason’s goal now was just to find him and arrest him rather than see him in court.

But as he stared at that calendar he began to suspect he may need more time. So he pulled his keyboard forward and began drafting an email to his personnel department, or Human Resources, as they like to be called nowadays. He was asking to push back his leaving date one month, hoping that it would give him the time he needed. But as his finger hovered over the send key he wondered what reaction he would get from Kathy when he told her he was staying on for another month. She already suspected he had no genuine intention of leaving so this could just add fuel to that fire and send her over the top.

He withdrew his finger and clicked on save draft. Then he put his computer into sleep mode, stood up, and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair.

‘Smithy, I’m just going to see Brenda Simpson again to find out if she’s heard anything from Pitt or if she has any more ideas about where he could be. I’ll be a couple of hours, okay?’

Smithy, a wily old detective in his last year of service, grunted his response without looking up from his computer screen. He was typing up a report that Mason had highlighted as urgent at that morning’s briefing.

‘Bloody technology,’ he grumbled just before Mason left the office.

Mason pulled up outside the council owned property that Miss Simpson had shared for six years with her only daughter, Emily, and her live-in boyfriend, Darren Pitt. He took a moment to remember their last meeting two weeks previous and how distressed she had been. The revamped news bulletins asking for information on Pitt’s whereabouts had opened wounds that were still painfully fresh in her mind.

As Mason glanced at the house he thought about his own daughter, Rosie, and wondered how he would cope if anything ever happened to her. How does anyone ever get over losing a daughter? he asked himself as he got out and approached the house.

He saw no signs of Miss Simpson through the lounge window as he walked up the path to the front door of the three-bedroom semi-detached house, built in the middle of the last century, and as such, was functional, but lacked any real character.
