Chapter Eight
Beth made a last quick check round the room to ensure she had not forgotten anything. She couldnât help smiling to herself as she remembered some of things she had got up to here during the past few days. Was this room often host to such antics? If so, it was a wonder the bedsprings stood up to the strain!
Downstairs, she paid her bill quickly, using the business credit card Simon had given her, then picked up her small case and headed towards the main entrance. Before she reached it, the door swung open and a tall man strode in, his eyes scanning the lobby. Seeing Beth, his lips widened into an amused grin and he headed confidently towards her.
âMs Bradley?â he questioned.
Beth nodded, puzzled.
âIâm Daniel. Mr Stevens asked me to collect you and your luggage. I understand we are giving you a ride home.â He raised his left eyebrow as if implying that there was something strange or unusual about the idea. His voice was both deep and sensual and Beth felt an immediate physical attraction for him.
Realising that he must be Geoffâs chauffeur, she examined him with interest. He was extremely handsome in his black three-piece suit, crisp white ruffled shirt and dark green tie. His short hair was beautifully cut and as black as midnight. His eyes were an unusual shade of deep blue, almost violet, and his features had a roguish, almost Romany look that made Beth think of a gypsy or a pirate.
She could almost see him with a patch over one eye, swinging a cutlass and swigging a bottle of rum. Her heart fluttered and a warm glow spread through her body as she fleetingly pictured herself captured and helpless at his mercy.
As Daniel reached for her bag, he raised his eyebrow again and gave her a slightly quizzical look. âMr Stevens is still at the training centre making his final farewells,â he explained. âWeâll pick him up as we leave.â He took her arm. He had a strong but gentle grip. She noticed that his hands were large and beautifully manicured.
âThis way, maâam.â He began to guide her towards the door. As they moved, he gave her several sideways glances, his face clearly bemused. Beth had a feeling he wanted to say something but was not sure how to begin.
âIs something bothering you?â she questioned. âYou seem surprised at the idea of me travelling with you.â Surely, he couldnât be such a snob as to think her not good enough to travel with the great Geoff Stevens, could he?
Daniel immediately looked awkward. Beth noticed his hand had tightened on her arm. She shivered slightly at the strength in his fingers.
âUm, well.â Daniel looked around as if to make sure no one else was within hearing distance. âItâs nothing. Just that, well, Mr Stevens hasnât taken any interest in women since,â he paused, seeming to search for the right words. âWell, not for a long time, anyway.â
Before Beth could react to this startling piece of information, Daniel let go of her arm and stepped away.
