Leah perused the list once again, trying to see if another pattern would emerge. It was hard to determine where the killer would strike next. Short of calling up everyone on the list, rounding them up, and taking them into protective custody, she didnât know what they could do.
Jeff seemed to be taking a controversial approach. In private, heâd suggested waiting for the next body to drop. The killer already had a taste for it and wouldnât stop at two. When sheâd called him out for his surprisingly cavalier attitude, heâd retorted that the individuals on the list were hardly angels. He was certain that the killer would slip up. They always did in the end.
And then they got the dreaded call about the next victim who had been discovered dumped around the back of an old pub. She had the list in her mind and was trying to think of who it might have been.
But then the name came through, and it would have been so much better if it had been someone on the list.
She and Jeff were on the scene quickly, pushing their way through the crowd of onlookers, getting a look at the fresh horror.
It was Derek Altman.
His eyes were closed but he looked anything but peaceful. Leahâs eyes fell on the journalistâs blazer, where a red stain had spread over his clothes.
âHe must have been stabbed to death,â Jeff noted, kneeling down next to the body. âDo you think it could have been a mugging gone wrong? Some kid wanted his wallet, Derek wouldnât budge, and then they killed him in the struggle?â
âNo,â she replied instantly, looking back on the last time sheâd seen Derek and how full of life heâd been. âTheyâre usually uncoordinated thugs. This is something else.â
âDo you think itâs the same killer as the first two?â Jeff suggested, looking back to the crowd, news of the grisly details spreading like wildfire.
âI canât see what the connection is,â she replied, a second before the connection became apparent. âHe covered the court cases for the two murder victims.â
Pulling on a pair of gloves, she started rummaging through the manâs pockets, looking for any clues. When each check, her suspicion grew.
Finally, she looked up Jeff and said, âHis phoneâs gone.â
âSo, they left everything else but took his phone,â Jeff surmised, drawing a blank. âWhy would they do that?â
âBecause it might have been the only thing connecting him to the killer,â she guessed, feeling weighed down by the grim prospect. âI think he knew his attacker.â
