Leah perused the list once again, trying to see if another pattern would emerge. It was hard to determine where the killer would strike next. Short of calling up everyone on the list, rounding them up, and taking them into protective custody, she didn’t know what they could do.

Jeff seemed to be taking a controversial approach. In private, he’d suggested waiting for the next body to drop. The killer already had a taste for it and wouldn’t stop at two. When she’d called him out for his surprisingly cavalier attitude, he’d retorted that the individuals on the list were hardly angels. He was certain that the killer would slip up. They always did in the end.

And then they got the dreaded call about the next victim who had been discovered dumped around the back of an old pub. She had the list in her mind and was trying to think of who it might have been.

But then the name came through, and it would have been so much better if it had been someone on the list.

She and Jeff were on the scene quickly, pushing their way through the crowd of onlookers, getting a look at the fresh horror.

It was Derek Altman.

His eyes were closed but he looked anything but peaceful. Leah’s eyes fell on the journalist’s blazer, where a red stain had spread over his clothes.

“He must have been stabbed to death,” Jeff noted, kneeling down next to the body. “Do you think it could have been a mugging gone wrong? Some kid wanted his wallet, Derek wouldn’t budge, and then they killed him in the struggle?”

“No,” she replied instantly, looking back on the last time she’d seen Derek and how full of life he’d been. “They’re usually uncoordinated thugs. This is something else.”

“Do you think it’s the same killer as the first two?” Jeff suggested, looking back to the crowd, news of the grisly details spreading like wildfire.

“I can’t see what the connection is,” she replied, a second before the connection became apparent. “He covered the court cases for the two murder victims.”

Pulling on a pair of gloves, she started rummaging through the man’s pockets, looking for any clues. When each check, her suspicion grew.

Finally, she looked up Jeff and said, “His phone’s gone.”

“So, they left everything else but took his phone,” Jeff surmised, drawing a blank. “Why would they do that?”

“Because it might have been the only thing connecting him to the killer,” she guessed, feeling weighed down by the grim prospect. “I think he knew his attacker.”
