TWELVE

BECCA

The next few weeks and months passed slowly. I grew closer to Yalxander, and he took everything at my pace. It was still amazing to me that a huge, purple, alien warrior could be so kind and considerate. He was everything I could have ever wanted in a mate.

While Yalxander, or Yal, as I had started to call him, was on patrol, I would wander the ship and enjoy the amenities for the Tributes. There was a small movie room, computers for contacting family back home, a gym, games, books, lounge areas, and, most importantly, the viewing deck. The viewing deck was my favorite part of the mothership. I could spend hours sitting and watching space go by, and I often did.

I didn’t see much of the other Tributes except during mealtimes. It seemed that everyone, myself included, enjoyed getting their brains fucked out instead of socializing, I couldn’t complain about that.

Yalxander and I grew closer every hour the passed. We spent as much time together as possible, and I never grew tired of him.

One day, or night, I never really could tell, I was watching the direct feed of the viewing deck on the paper-thin tablet that Yalxander had given me. It was my little portal to the world, it even had Earth news and television on it, albeit a few days behind. I laid on the bed with the tablet in front of me, dressed in loungewear.

Suddenly, the communicator alarm rang out on Yalxander’s computer.

“What the heck?” I pulled myself out of bed and went to the desk. Yalxander hardly even got calls, and even when he did, it was usually something about a scouting mission or other warrior stuff. It never rang while he was gone.

The screen flashed. Incoming call… incoming call…Transferred from the main tower… transfer for Room 451…

My hand paused over the button. Should I answer it? I sucked in a breath and pressed the red button.

The screen flickered on, and the sound of static filled the room. A moment later, a message scrolled across the screen. Incoming message from Earth…

My hands started shaking. “Earth?” I whispered. My mouth went dry. There was only one person who would be calling me from Earth: my sister.

Please hold while we connect… please hold while we connect … thank you for your patience… The message appeared in English and Zexian.

Finally, the picture came through. It was grainy, but I could see my sister. “Donna!” I gasped.

“Becca. I hope you can hear me. I didn’t have enough money for a live call, so I hope this recording works. Did you know I have to pay by the minute for this shit? Anyway!” She babbled, obviously on a time crunch.

I suppressed a smile. Hearing her voice made me so happy.

“I need you, Becca!” Donna’s voice became urgent. “The doctors say there’s something wrong with the baby, something I can’t afford. I’m so scared, Becca. Please, please, if this reaches you, please find a way to come back to Earth. I’m scared.
