VNC viewers may control screen with password: VNC is an outdated protocol that Apple’s screen-sharing technology extends with more security and features. There’s no good reason to keep this option turned on, particularly because VNC passwords are notoriously easy to crack.

Install Third-Party Screen Sharing

For robust and secure screen sharing, you almost certainly want to subscribe to a third-party service that has the added benefit of tunneling through routers to allow internet-based access of devices on your privately addressed networks. Check out my Macworld round-up from 2019 that remains valid.

Spoiler: the best option for most people is Splashtop Business Access. Despite “business” in its name, it’s not priced ridiculously: it’s $60 per year (with a free trial) for one person to access two computers remotely from any number of other devices across many platforms. If you routinely need internet-based remote access, it’s the cheapest and best solution.
