“Gin and Tonic. Botanist if you have it,” the man said.

I finished making change for a Bud draft and looked up at the new patron at the bar. Then I looked down at Tony’s end of the bar and noted he was just as slammed as I was.

“Sure thing,” I told the G and T man as I set the bills down in front of my last customer.

“That’s for you, darlin’.” The draft man pushed a five back and added a wink.

A five-dollar tip on a three-fifty beer was ridiculous, but I had feed to buy for my girls, so I wasn’t going to quibble.

“Thanks, bud.”

I pocketed the tip, gave him no room for further conversation, and turned to grab the gin off the back wall. I was pouring the drink when Matt came up behind me.

“You need anything?”

“Do you know how to change out a keg?” I asked.

“Yep.”

I wasn’t sure why that surprised me, but it did.

“You do?”

I finished the drink, reached around Matt, and grabbed a lime out of the tray.

“I told you I worked at the club when I was a teenager. Might not have been legal letting a fifteen-year-old change out kegs, but I did it all the same. And before I took over Balls, I got a refresher course. So, yeah, I know how to change out a keg. Which one needs to be replaced?”

“Blue Moon.”

“On it.”

“Hey, boss, Blue Moon’s sudsy!” Tony yelled over the noise of the crowd.

“Matt’s changing it!” I yelled back and set the drink down.

“Six dollars,” I told the man.

“Is that Matt Kessler?” the man asked, looking in the direction of the door Matt had just walked through.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. It was a Saturday night. The bar was packed, all the tables were full, and there were wall-to-wall people. I didn’t have time to ask why this man was asking after Matt, and I didn’t like the way he was staring at the door.

“Six dollars, please.”

“That’s not Matt?” The man asked the same question, just a different way, and I didn’t like that either.

He wasn’t catching the hint that I wasn’t going to share.

“Sorry, but I can’t give out the names of the people who work here.”

That was a total lie, and the man knew it.

“I’m a friend of Matt’s,” he tried again.

“Two Millers!” a new customer shouted. “Bottles.”

“Well, if you’re a friend, then why are you asking me his name?” I didn’t let the guy answer before I went on. “Six dollars now, please.”

The guy tossed seven bucks on the bar, grabbed his drink, and left.

I grabbed the money and went back to serving drinks.

It was nearing on ten, and some of the pool tables were now empty, but all of the tables surrounding the pool area were still full. I’d scheduled three waitresses but I was thinking I needed four on the floor, or I needed to hire a busser to help clear the tables. I knew what it was like to have to serve and clear, and when you were slammed, someone picking up empties was a big help.
