What’s Going On?

You probably found the snow melted faster in the sun than in the shade. A taiga biome has lots of conifer trees. Therefore, there is plenty of shade in a taiga forest. The shade helps prevent the snow from melting. Other factors that help preserve the snow include cold temperatures, limited sun, and limited rain.

Figure 6. Two equal masses of snow are placed so that one is in bright sunlight and the other is in shade.
