2. Pluck Jing (Cai Jing, 採勁)
Pluck jing is a pull used to upset the opponent’s stability and set him up for an attack. It can be used to immobilize him, upset his balance, or stop his attack. To use cai jing, you usually have to first use controlling jing on one of the opponent’s joints such as the wrist, elbow, or shoulder, and then pull his arm downward or sideward. In principle, when your opponent transmits jing to his hand, the force must go through the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. If one of these joints is controlled and pulled, the jing will be cut off and his root broken. The opponent will usually tense his muscles and use his li to resist by pulling in the opposite direction. Once you sense his power, immediately follow the direction of his power and use your press or push jing to attack. Once you grasp the trick of this, you will usually win.
When pluck jing is used to pull sideward, you usually pull the opponent’s arm across his chest and downward. This prevents any further attack with his legs or other hand. Sideward pluck is often used to set up the opponent for an attack, which may be press, push, elbow stroke, or shoulder stroke.
