9 The After Heaven Arrangement of King Wen

The After Heaven arrangement of the Eight Diagrams, attributed to King Wen (Wen Wang) of the Chou dynasty, is not necessarily a different arrangement as such, but is to be viewed and used in conjunction with the Before Heaven arrangement. It is a means by which to see more clearly the workings of the Before Heaven arrangement, showing symbolically how each of the Before Heaven images are reflected within our world. For example, the topmost image of the Before Heaven arrangement is Heaven, but King Wen places Fire in this position. The Fire image is located in this position because the aspects of actual fire (brightness, illumination, and so forth) reveal Heaven to us here on Earth, as Heaven is bright and illumining. King Wen arranged each of the Eight Diagrams in this manner, so that they reveal the inner quality and function of each image presented by Fu Hsi.
