Chapter 4

The next morning, I woke up in Jake’s arms. He stirred beside me, drawing me close and touching his lips tenderly to mine.

“Morning, sis. Ready for another round?” His hand cupped my breast, which responded instantly to his touch.

“I guess I am,” I smiled. But just as we were about to get busy, we heard pounding at the door.

“Anybody in there?” a loud voice called out.

“Yeah!” Jake called back. “Give us a second.” We scrambled into our now-dry clothes and opened the door to a park ranger. Stomping the snow off his boots, he entered the cabin without an invitation.

“Saw your chimney smoke and thought you could use a little help,” he said, looking around the small room and coming to his own conclusions. “I’m Ranger Davis and this here cabin belongs to a hunter friend of mine. I like to keep an eye on things.”

“We got caught in the snowstorm with a dead battery,” Jake explained. “This was the only shelter we could find.”

“That your Jeep down the way?” We both nodded. “I’ll give you kids a few minutes to straighten up, then we can give ‘er a jump so you two can get on home. I’ll wait for you outside.”

We scurried around, trying to put things back how we originally found them and trying not to laugh at almost being caught having sex.

With the Ranger’s help, Jake’s Jeep was started in no time. “Thank you for your help, Ranger Davis,” I said when we were ready to take off. “We sure are lucky you came along when you did.”

“I’m happy to be of assistance, miss.”

Jake took out his wallet and handed the ranger two twenty-dollar bills. “Would you mind passing this along to your hunter friend for us as a thank you?”

The ranger took the money, looking pleasantly surprised. “I certainly will.”

“Thanks again,” I said, tugging Jake’s arm to move him along. When we were buckled up and ready to head down the trail, I rolled down my window and smiled sweetly. “One more thing, Ranger Davis. You might want to let your hunter friend know that he needs a new bottle of whiskey.”

“I’ll certainly do that,” Ranger Davis said with a tip of his hat and an almost-smile on his face.

Two days later, it was time for Jake to head back to school. We drove to the airport in silence; even the music was turned off. Getting stranded in the snow had changed everything.

“Aren’t you going to park?” I asked when Jake pulled up to the passenger drop-off area.

“Naw, I think it’ll be easier this way.” He was probably right, but I had hoped to stay with him as long as possible.

We got out and he handed me the keys to his Jeep. “Try to get her home in one piece, okay?” He was grinning from ear to ear but all I could manage was a weak smile in return.

“I’ll do my best,” I said, biting my lip so I wouldn’t cry.

He hugged me then and I threw my arms around his neck.
