Carrie screeched into the driveway of her dadâs house, threw the car into park, and jumped out. Manny ran after her toward the front door.
âJason!â They banged on the wooden door with both fists. âJason!â Her idiot brother was probably asleep, but his car in the driveway proved his presence at the house.
Carrie fumbled in her pocket for her keys and unlocked the door. A powerful odor punched her in the chest and they both coughed and covered their noses and mouths with the front of their shirts. The front hall seemed quiet, and Bertha was nowhere in sight. The cat always greeted Carrie at the door when she would visit; Carrie did half-raise her, after all.
âJason?!â Carrie yelled, the sound slightly muffled by her t-shirt.
âWhere is everyone?â mumbled Manny.
She turned the corner into the kitchen and gasped, the shirt dropping from her face. Jason lay in a heap on the floor. His head and shoulders leaned against the oven door and his mouth hung open. He looked terrible. She dropped to his side and shook his shoulders. Manny stood over them, peering down.
âUmph,â Jason mumbled as he opened his eyes.
Carrie exhaled, happy he could breathe. She screamed into his face as she continued to shake him. âJason! What happened? Are you okay?â
âWhat the fuck, man?â Manny said.
Jason managed to pull away from his sister in time before leaning over and throwing up onto the kitchen floor. He sat up and wiped his mouth with his shirt sleeve.
âWhat, are you sick?â Carrie scooted away from him, bumping into Manny behind her. Manny stumbled backward as Carrie sat on the floor.
âSorry,â she said in Mannyâs direction, eyes still locked on Jason.
Jason turned to Manny, then Carrie. He looked confused, like he didnât recognize them. âSamâ¦â
âThat asshole is nothinâ but trouble, I told you a hundred times-â
âWhat time is it?â Jason asked, looking around for the clock on the wall in the kitchen.
âSix-thirty in the morning, we just got off our shift,â said Carrie.
âWhat-â
âI just want you to tell me why the fuck you think you can just break into places and now your best friend is getting arrested, do you know what this is going to look like for me when they find out? And theyâre gonna find out, itâs just a matter of time-â Carrie screamed.
âShut up!â Jason shouted, holding his head in his hands, âShut the fuck up for a fucking minute. My head is killing me and your yelling isnât helping.â
He looked up at her and said, âCarrie,â as if he were just recognizing her.
âYou can worry about being sick later. Right now Iâm trying to keep you out of jail. Do you know that asshole ran from the fucking cops?â Carrie stood up and grabbed a paper towel from the roll on the counter. She ran cool water over it, then leaned down and pressed it to Jasonâs forehead.
âWhat? When?â Jason looked around the kitchen.
âEarlier this evening, she was actually on the radio when it happened. Theyâre looking for him and eventually you, Iâm sure.
