CHAPTER 15

Skjult Fjord

Kattegat, Norway

Present Day

Gabriella took a deep breath, trying to catch some air. ‘Hidden Fjord’ was right. This thing had been damn hard to find. And then there had been the whole confusion about whether or not Kattegat even existed and if it did was it a town? Was it even in Norway? All of her research had been contradictory. She had absolutely no hard evidence that such a place as Kattegat or Skjult Fjord even existed.

One night when she was no more than five, Gabriella had gone into the attic in her family’s home on a dark and stormy night and discovered a trunk that had once belonged to her great-grandmother. It had been riffled through over the years, but at the bottom, in a secret compartment, Gabriella had found the real treasure—her great-grandmother’s diaries. In them, she spoke of meeting with members of the Polish Underground, one of whom was a young woman whose ancestor’s portrait had been painted by Leon Wyczółkowski. The portrait had been loaned to the Museum of Warsaw and had disappeared from the museum when the Nazis had invaded. It was an evocative, bordering on erotic, portrait; the woman had feared it would never be returned to the family.

Her great-grandmother had tried to find out what had happened to her friend after she’d been captured, as well as to the rest of her family, and to the portrait. The family had been caught up in the burning of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. Some of them had survived being captured only to be shipped off and killed in one of the Nazi concentration camps. The painting, spirited away by the Nazis, had disappeared and was never seen or heard of again.

Gabriella’s imagination had been captured by the diaries. Armed with her advanced degrees, she had followed her sister to France, but instead of Paris, Gabriella had set up shop in Nice. It boasted a large airport which made it easier to travel and follow her passion for representing ex-patriated clients who were still trying to recover artwork and other treasures stolen by the Nazis.

As she reached the top of the fjord and looked down its length she sighed. “Why couldn’t the damn Nazis just have marked it with a big X. It would make it so much easier to find.”

Gabriella was convinced the cache of Nazi treasures her great-grandmother had alluded to in her diaries was here somewhere in Skjult Fjord.

All she had to do now was find it… well, that and make sure Anders Jensen, the head of the Valhalla Syndicate, didn’t find her first.
