Chapter 15
âWhatâs for dinner?â Oscar asked for the third time in fifteen minutes.
âIâm not sure, but if Sailorâs cooking tonight, I imagine heâll insist on a higher proportion of vegetables to carbs than you are comfortable with. Good thing you just ate that huge bowl of popcorn.â
âPopcorn isnât food,â Oscar said. âItâs practically all air.â
âAnd the butter?â
Oscar blinked. âWhy would you eat popcorn without butter?â
This is a question Iâve asked all my life. âWhy donât you go finish your movie, and Iâll root around the kitchen and come up with a couple of options. And then, I dunno, maybe you and Sailor can have a knife fight or arm wrestle or something to see who gets to choose.â
âI canât hardly hear the movie, what with all that racket.â
âWhat racket?â
âSailor makes a racket when he goes into a trance.â
âNo, he doesnât. Heâs completely silent.â
âWell, sure, silent on this realm. Youâre saying you donât hear that screeching sound?â
âI thought that was your movie.â
âHa!â He waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. âNot that kind of screeching.â
I shook my head. âMaybe itâs like they say, some sounds are silent to human ears but the dogs can hear them.â
âYouâre calling me a dog now? Iâm a dog in this scenario?â My familiar had a penchant for quoting from whatever movie or book he had just seen or read. In an attempt to steer Oscar away from horror movies, recently I had suggested the old classic When Harry Met Sally.
âDonât be silly,â I said. Oscar did not like to be compared to a domesticated animal, no matter how adorable. âBut maybe the noise thing wonât be much of a problem in the future. Sailor was talking to the landlord about renovating the attic. If it works out, it would double the size of our apartment because the attic extends clear to the next building.â
âHe find any ghosts up there?â
âNary a one,â I said.
âIt would be nice to have more room,â Oscar said, looking thoughtful. âI know Sailorâs your husband, mistress, and heâs all right most of the time, but I ainât gonna lie: Heâs been kinda underfoot around here.â
âI appreciate your tolerance, Oscar,â I said, keeping a straight face. âYou are a true gentleman.â
He nodded. âSâokay. But still, a rehab project could be worse than ghosts, if you ask me. Itâs no fun living on a construction site. Take it from me.â
âAt what point in your life did you live on a construction site?â
âYou kiddinâ me? Those old castles need constant maintenance, amiright? Hey, Sailor! Whatâs for dinner?â
I turned to see Sailor standing in the hall. He always looked a little vague after emerging from a trance, as if he wasnât sure of the time and place.
âAnything?â I asked.
âYesâflowering eel grass. Murkiness. And tragedy.â
