CHAPTER 51

Mal gasped and sat up in the same movement, her heart racing as she blinked and tried to resolve the shapes of her surroundings in the darkness. She was lying down. She could breathe. She was in a bed that felt… familiar. Her bed.

She swallowed, trying to calm her racing thoughts as she continued to look around and confirm that she appeared to be back in her own room. She was still naked, which was off. She was always in her underwear or a nightgown, never entirely nude.

Her window was open, which was another detail that didn’t fit, especially given that it was still deep within the Lunar Night-Week. She stood up and closed it, trying to parse through and make sense of her memory of recent events.

“Miss Leone?” Mr. Argo’s voice came from the living room, followed shortly after by his footsteps. “Is that you?”

The door opened before she could reach a sheet. Mr. Argo made a choking noise upon seeing her naked and immediately fled back into the hallway.

“I’m so sorry, ma’am,” he said, quickly. “I didn’t realize you were back.”

“It’s fine,” said Mal. “Neither did I. How… did I get here?”

“Um, excuse me?”

“I’m assuming that I didn’t come inside through the front door, given your surprise,” said Mal. She pulled a nightgown out of her wardrobe and quickly slipped it on.

“No, ma’am,” said Mr. Argo. “The last I heard from you was when you told me you’d be staying at Mr. Kennison’s for a few days. I assumed you were still there, but after seeing the news, obviously I’ve been concerned.”

“The news?” Mal joined him in the living room. The TV was on with the volume low, and Mr. Argo turned it up, though she didn’t need to hear what the reporters were saying to get the gist of it.

The ticker across the bottom of the screen read “VERVE FORCE AND ARMADA FIGHT OBSIDIAN KNIGHT AND SENTINELS.” Footage of a space battle that also included the Sentinel scout ship was playing with various sections looped for emphasis.

“Oh, God,” she whispered. “What happened? Where is Cormac?”

“The details have only slowly been trickling out,” said Mr. Argo. “One of the reports was of Obsydius, Endymia, and Apollos being seen entering Earth’s atmosphere with the colossus.”

“Are you serious?”

Mr. Argo nodded. Mal brought her hands to her chest, taking a slow breath as she tried to process the information. It didn’t mean that Cormac was dead, assuming the v-suits could survive entering the planet’s atmosphere.

There were too many questions and not enough answers, starting with how she’d arrived back at her apartment. She sat down on the couch, her hand reflexively going to her tether in a pointless attempt to call or message Cormac. It was gone, along with the rest of her clothing, as though she needed more confirmation that her experience within the Sentinel ship was real and not a strange dream.

“Ms. Leone,” said Mr. Argo. “What can I do?”

Mal shook her head. “I… don’t know yet. I suppose we just have to wait and see.
