Chapter fourteen

Around forty minutes later, we stared at each other in dismay. The condom had broken, splitting open like a paper napkin in water. My chest heaved as I tried to draw in enough oxygen into my starved lungs.

My blood was still humming, vibrating with lingering fulfillment that I couldn’t focus on the disaster. Braden hovered over me, his chest rising and falling quickly.

A fresh wave of desire coursed through my satisfied body.

Marissa, focus. The condom broke.

I forced myself to say it. “The condom broke.”

Braden nodded.

Expression grim, he searched my face for a long moment. “Yes.”

He finally got off me. I gulped. I listened to him dispose of the condom, probably. Toilet flushed, the sound of water running, and I still didn’t move.

The ramifications of our carelessness was beginning to set in. The condom broke. And it had to happen at the right time of the month.

Braden returned. He handed me a wet cloth, his expression closed off.

At the stage, I would freshen up, and say my goodbyes without looking back. For obvious reasons, I couldn’t do that now. What a time for such a thing to happen, and with Braden no less.

I wanted an enjoyable one night stand, and got it. I just didn’t plan for this complication.

“We should talk.”

It was the last thing I wanted to do but there was no avoiding it.

I got dressed, the silence between us as oppressive as an intruder in the room. When I was dressed, he led me to the office. When I got the chance to look back on this, it would be hilarious and fitting that we’d have this conversation across from each other in his office.

“I’m sorry. This is all on me.”

I swallowed. “How did it happen?”

His face tightened in discomfort. “I’m not used to this.”

“This?”

“One night stands,” he said tightly, avoiding my eyes. “I haven’t been with anyone for some time.”

“How long is some time?” I asked curiously.

He rubbed his neck, gave an awkward shrug and frowned. “Three or four years.”

I gaped at him. Three or four years? The way his shoulders were raised defensively told me it was closer to four years. “You haven’t had sex in four years?”

“I said three or four,” he defended adorably.

“Wow,” I breathed. “And the girl I saw you with, on that date?”

“Nothing happened. I’m sorry,” he continued stiffly. “I can get you a printout of my medical report. I got it done recently.”

I nodded. It was the most awkward conversation ever. “It’s the, hmmm, right time of the month. I’m not protected. So…”

Another awkward beat thrummed. It was ironic. Minutes ago we couldn’t get enough of each other and now we could barely have a conversation.

Braden swallowed, ran a hand over his beard. The rasping sound caused an answering, embarrassing clench deep inside me. I was shameless.

He caught my reaction, his eyes dipping to my mouth and away. “I’d like to be kept abreast of the situation.”

Situation. Considering how I couldn’t get a little pregnant no matter how much I tried during my marriage.
