It was around 6:00 p.m. when Byer left the elementary school, riding in a car driven by Holocher. As the car sped down Kingsley Drive it passed a small park off to the right, which was tucked against a small man-made lake. There were two soccer goals in the park and the faint outline of a lined field; street after street of cookie-cutter houses were nearby.

This was a neighborhood field.

Down on the grass, a man and a boy were standing about ten yards apart. The boy was no older than five or six, and the man, likely the child’s father, was passing him the ball.

Here was everything Byer had just presented on, teed-up for review. A father was teaching soccer to his very young child. How would he do it? What would he emphasize? When the ball arrived, would the boy put his foot on it, maybe do some toe taps and bell touches, maybe try a pullback or two? One mile from where Byer had given his presentation, here was a live look at America’s entry level.

The father passed his son the ball, and as soon as it got near him, the boy kicked that ball as hard and as far as he could. The father then fetched the ball and they did it again. Over and over and over.

Talking about that scene later, Byer displays not even a hint of discouragement. “Oh, we’ll reach that parent,” he says. “We will.”
