The Six-Second Resume
Despite the threats (or promises) that innovations like social media and infographics will replace resumes, this hasn’t happened yet. Most companies still require applicants, including referred candidates, to submit a standard resume when applying for a position. So, for now, resumes are a necessary tool in your job switch. Take the time to do it right. While there are many useful resources available to help you craft a great resume, here is some advice with Switchers’ needs in mind.
With a foot in the door through a referral, your resume will be sure to follow. It’s great to get your resume looked at by a hirer, but don’t get too excited just yet. You might be surprised (and maybe a little irritated) to learn that the average hiring manager will spend a mere six seconds reviewing your resume. So, you’ll want to make it stellar. Out of those six seconds, recruiters spend four seconds looking at four areas:
•Your job titles
•The companies where you worked
•Your job start and end dates
•Your education8
They’ll likely spend the remaining two seconds glancing at your profile section at the top (and yes, you must have one as a Switcher!) or other accomplishments that leap off the page to catch their eye. With so little time to capture attention, and the inherent challenge of conveying so much on a piece of paper, you need to differentiate yourself. Be sure to connect with your audience through the language they use instead of distancing yourself from them with jargon or irrelevant information from your old industry or function. While a resume will rarely be your entrée into a new job as a Switcher, even if you get a referral, you still need an effective one to pass along. Follow these suggestions to craft a resume that will grab attention.
