“Your hound has not disappointed us, Colonel,” said Mr. Powel. “This is the first fox we’ve raised in months.”

“A most sagacious beast,” said one rider.

“Super-excellent!” said another.

There was much talk, at the Powels’ table that night, of the Colonel’s elegant riding and of his superb foxhound. I was too busy nibbling at my marrowbone to pay much mind.

We returned to Carpenters’ Hall, where discussions had grown more heated. Word had come down from Massachusetts that the British had tried to seize the colonists’ store of gunpowder from a place near Boston. The outraged colonists had agreed to ignore the Intolerable Acts and stop paying taxes to England. The British would most definitely use force. Colonists were advised to arm themselves. The men in the hall shouted over one another. Some felt the Bostonians had gone too far. Others felt they had not gone far enough. In the end, John Adams, himself a son of the north, said, “America will support Massachusetts or perish with her.”

On that bold note, the Congress broke up. The Colonel and I were only too happy to return to the Mansion House Farm. But as fate would have it, we would not remain there for long.
