Becoming a mother can be a tough adjustment, especially for those of us who have worked in management positions. We’ve gotten used to making daily decisions and seeing them carried out, putting together schedules, feeling confident and in control of our days.
Babies aren’t interested in schedules and plans. They live moment to moment, without clocks or calendars. Their needs are immediate and strongly expressed. As mothers, we can take one of two approaches: we can try to take charge and push our baby to follow our schedule, or we can bend and respond to our baby’s needs.
For some of us, it feels more like breaking than bending. Preconceptions come crashing down. The real baby isn’t at all like the dream baby. We finally give in and ride the waves. And then, amazingly, mothering gets easier. Accepting broken sleep, accepting the baby’s intense early needs, trusting our instincts—it all helps not only with mothering but also with sleeping.
