Chapter Eleven

Wyla

I smell breakfast.

Savory eggs... something spicy and meaty that makes me salivate. My mother was an ace in the kitchen, but it was Dad's cooking I loved most. He always made too much, which meant I could sneak extra bits of toast to the ducks in the nearby pond.

When I think of those birds now, I picture them snapping hungrily. Their orange bills spreading wide, coming for me no matter how much bread I throw. They're insatiable.

I see fangs. Big, shining white fangs.

He's going to kill me.

I bolt upright, flailing around in a panic as I prepare to fight off Lorence. My feet tangle in something that send me sprawling. The chains! I'm still bound!

When I hit the wooden floor I grunt. That's when I realize I'm not in the forest. I'm in a bedroom, next to a large four-poster bed hung with a transparent canopy. Around my ankles are heavy black blankets.

My clothes are gone. In amazement I pluck at the luxurious, mauve silk robe that's belted around my waist. The sleeves are a little long for me, and when I stand, it drifts to the floor. It's designed for someone taller.

"I'm alive." I say it out loud just to hear my own voice and make it real. Yes, definitely alive. But how is that possible?

I close my eyes, see a flash of the dhampyr's teeth. Cringing, I look around with new interest. I have a feeling I'm in the castle but need to make sure. Standing carefully, I prod my body, shake out my fingers, as I search for signs of injury.

When I graze the small cuts on my neck my knees lock up. My heart shrinks. There's a vanity in the room with a huge, oval mirror attached to the top. The edges are elaborate metal tendrils, like grape vines. Tugging the robe away from my shoulder I study the scabs in my reflection.

He really did bite me.

Will I turn into a vampire?

My heart is racing wildly so I know I'm not an undead monster. Yet. Maybe dhampyr's can't turn people? The only one who can tell me is...

Facing the bedroom door, I open it slowly. I'm in a hallway with red and green diamond patterned wallpaper. There are oil paintings hung sporadically. No windows, the only light comes from a handful of lanterns on the walls.

I wander a few feet, straining to hear anything. The smell of spices and grease reaches me again; stronger than when I woke up. Following the scent to my right I step into an open area with an elegant wooden railing. I'm standing above the foyer with the main front door. There's no light coming through the drapes; it's either very late or very early.

I could go down these stairs and run outside. I can escape and not look back.

Quietly I descend the steps. My palm glides over the curving banister. At the base of the stairs I glance side to side. Leaving would be wise. For whatever reason, Lorence didn't murder me.
