CHAPTER NINETEEN

Kett was climbing the stairs when he heard Porter cry out.

Not a shout of anger, not a bellowed command, but a gargled scream of pain—instantly and unbearably recognisable.

He grabbed the bannister and hauled himself to the top just as Porter called out again. It was coming from the room to the left, the front bedroom. The door was shut. Duke appeared from the room across the landing, the battering ram in his hand.

“Who was that?” the PC asked.

There was a splintering crunch from the bedroom, an angry roar from somebody else. Kett heard the sound of something heavy fall to the floor and he took his chance, running into the door like he was tackling it. A heavy weight was blocking it from the other side but he managed to open it enough to see that it was pitch black in there. More noises spilled out, the sound of two people fighting. He opened the torch on his phone, trying to make sense of what was blocking the way.

“Move!” Duke said, and Kett didn’t hesitate as the giant PC hurled himself into the door with every ounce of his bodyweight. The top hinge ripped free and the door tilted open, Duke falling through the gap onto a pile of binbags.

Kett stepped over him, the light from his phone revealing two men on the floor in the middle of the room. The one on the top was Porter, his face a mask of agony and rage as he tried to pin the other guy.

“Knife,” Porter grunted, and Kett saw it in the man’s hand.

He crossed the room in a heartbeat and kicked the man hard in his hand, the knife sliding into a pile of boxes. Duke was beside him, his hands wrapped tight around the man’s other arm.

“Used my cuffs already,” he said.

“Here,” said a voice from the door as Savage appeared. She hurled a pair of handcuffs and Duke caught them, snapping them shut around the man’s wrist. The guy was struggling so much he looked like he was having a fit, a geyser of foam spraying from his lips and the whites of his eyes the brightest things in the room.

“Fuck you!” he spat. “Fuck you fuck you fuck you.”

Porter climbed off him, and between him, Duke, and Kett they rolled the man onto his stomach, securing his other arm.

“Rupert Holden,” Porter said. “You are under arrest for…”

The words dried up in his throat and he keeled over, his head cracking off the floor.

“Jesus, Pete!” Kett yelled. “Fuck, Savage, get an ambulance!”

“Stuck you good, didn’t I!” Holden said, laughing.

“Get him out of here,” Kett said. “And get some fucking light in here!”

It was too dark, but when he ran his hands down Porter’s body he felt the blood on his sleeve, hot and sticky.

“Hang on, Pete,” he said. “Savage, now!”

“It’s coming,” she said as she ran back into the room, almost tripping on the binbags. She dropped to her knees beside Porter, her torch lighting up his face.
