CHAPTER 12

Dimitri

I’d thought I’d lost her all over again. The fact that she saved herself is impressive, and it makes me proud. Sabina has wiggled her way into my heart, and I can do nothing to stop it.

She’s silent on the drive home. I can’t help but glance over at her scarred cheek. That motherfucker Gabriel will die at my hands for that alone.

Once we return to our house, I turn to her in the car before she can get out. “Princess, are you ok?”

She sighs, dropping her chin to her chest. “No, I’m not.”

“What do you need from me?”

“I need you to never act like Gabriel.”

Her words sting. “I’m not Gabriel.”

“I know that.” She looks up at me, finally. “But just like he wanted to lock me up forever, so did you at one point. I can’t keep going through the fear of losing my freedom. I just can’t, Dimitri.” Tears spill from her eyes.

My heart aches for her. My heart has never ached for anyone before.

“Oh, Sabina.” I pull her into my arms. “I know I fucked up before. And I lost you because of it. I’m not going to lose you again. I don’t want to keep you chained to me if it means you’re unhappy. Losing you made me realize I should have treated you better. I want to do that now. I’m here.”

She cries harder, her shoulders wracking with her sobs. Once she quiets down, she says, “I needed to hear that.”

“Let’s get inside.”

Sabina looks so fragile as she enters the house. All I want to do is protect her from anything. I just have to remember not to control her too much in the process. Sabina is a person who thrives on having her freedom. I can’t take that away from her again.

“I’m tired,” she says, heading upstairs.

“Do you want to change?” I ask once we’re in our bedroom. It’s nice seeing her back in here. I didn’t know how much I missed it until right now.

She nods and goes into the closet, returning a few minutes later in a silky top and shorts set. She looks beautiful.

After I change into my shorts for the night, I join her in bed.

“Is this ok?” I ask her, wrapping my arms around her from behind.

“It’s ok,” she whispers.

I kiss her shoulder. “I’m happy you’re ok. I don’t think I could bear losing you again.”

Tension leaves her body as she relaxes into me. And even though she doesn’t respond, her physical reaction tells me everything I need to hear.
