Harry’s sentence was the worst. He was going to miss the first outdoor recess in two weeks. No kickball game for him. He wasn’t going to kick that brand-new red rubber ball to the moon.

Harry bonked his head down on his desk.

Song Lee looked very sad.

“Now that I’ve gotten to the bottom of that ill-advised caper, everyone can get back to their math challenge,” Mrs Bernbotham snapped.

Harry was doomed.

The Math Challenge

For the next twenty minutes, it was very quiet. Everyone was busy adding except Song Lee and Harry. Song Lee was writing a note. Harry was making circular scribbles that looked like a troop of Slinkys marching across his math journal.

“This problem is going to take forever,” Sidney complained.

“I’ve messed up three times now,” Dexter whined.

Mrs. Bernbotham heard our grumblings and went to the blackboard. “Boys and girls,” she said, “I want to tell you a story about a very famous German mathematician. His name was Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss. His last name has the same ‘ow’ sound as cow. Gauss. When he was in elementary school, his teacher got mad at the class and ordered them to add the numbers from one to one hundred. Thirty seconds later, much to the surprise of the teacher, Gauss arrived at the correct answer. He used a pattern to solve the very problem you are working on right now. I’m going to show you part of it. It’s up to you to complete Gauss’s pattern.”
