In this day and age, three models of communication that are often discussed in the literature are Linear, Interactional and Transactional which is widely adopted in various fields including engineering, mathematics, physics, biology and social sciences (education, organisational analysis and psychology).

Linear Model

The Linear model is closely linked to Shannon–Weaver (described in Fig. 7.1) and was highly influential during the twentieth century. The underlying assumptions conjectured in this model has been challenged, for example, communication only goes in one direction, a person can be a sender or receiver but not both. Already, this is problematic because communication is more dynamic than that. This model is also limited because it provides only one channel for one message.
