It was perhaps fortunate for his own state of mind that around this time Józef Czapski took on a new role which would occupy him for the remainder of the war. In April 1942 General Anders appointed him head of the Army Propaganda Service. His responsibilities were extensive: he was to oversee publication of the army’s two printed bulletins, plus the weekly journal The White Eagle, as well as looking after cultural relations with the Russians, the supply of news, the cinematographic and photographic sections of the propaganda service, publicity, the design and printing of posters, provision of music and entertainment, training of military orchestras, and the education of the young. The task was enormous but a welcome diversion from the hopeless quest on which Czapski had been engaged for so long. It also meant he could choose his own staff. For the next two years Czapski surrounded himself with the kind of people he liked best: intellectuals and artists, men and women who shared his interests and outlook, not one of them a professional soldier. With characteristic fair-mindedness, Czapski was even prepared to admit that there was a lot the Poles could learn from the Soviets when it came to propaganda.
