Chapter 7

“Mike? Are you there, over? Mike? Are you there, over?” Barney radioed. “No one is answering at the station,” he said as he slammed the radio against the dashboard.

Lexis looked at him, a little concerned. “I don’t think slamming the radio is going to help matters. Have you tried any other frequencies? Have you tried your phone?”

With a sigh he snapped, “Yes, I’ve tried other frequencies. Yes, I’ve tried my phone. Any other questions?” Lexis’ face crumpled and she looked away from him. Barney sighed and said, “I’m sorry. My phone was working earlier when I called you and Trevor but now it isn’t. Too many people trying to dial at the same time, I guess. When we started getting reports about what was going on, I was at the station. I was getting ready to leave and then we got word that our officers were dying in the streets. Reports about these things came flooding in. It was all too hard to believe. Officers were dying right and left. They were saying that the monsters were heading towards your neighborhood. I knew Trevor was going to your place, and I couldn’t stand the thought of my best friend dying. I haven’t heard anything over the radio since then.” He paused. “None of us have parents in our lives anymore. We are all we’ve got left.”

“You’re right, Barney.” Lexis looked at Stephan in the back seat and smiled. He returned her smile. She smiled at Trevor, but he didn’t notice her looking at him. He was staring out the window deep in thought.

He argued silently with himself. “It’s all my fault. Milo is dead because of me. Julia is dead because of me. Had I not tried to win back a woman who didn’t want to get won over, maybe Milo would still be alive. Had I just left Stephan in the hands of his mother, maybe she’d still be alive. Maybe I wouldn’t have uncovered this ugly truth. Maybe Lexis should’ve let Milo kill me. Maybe I should have killed Julia. She would have suffered less pain than she did.”

Looking over at what used to be his pride and joy, Trevor felt the deep cut of betrayal go through him like an assassin’s samurai sword. He didn’t feel bad for trying to win Lexis back. He loved her. Had never stopped loving her. The timing just wasn’t right. And Julia should’ve died the most painful death possible after all of the things that she’d put him through. She’d wasted years of his life. If she’d wanted to tell the truth, she should’ve just told the truth. ‘Hey Trevor, I fucked the person you hate most in the world to get pregnant and trap you under false pretenses.’ She knew it would hurt double to find out Stephan was Scottie’s son. He would never forgive her.

Trevor started to quietly cry. He still didn’t know if it was right to try to save Lexis instead of Stephen. He loved her and would have given anything for her to want to give their relationship another try.
