Chapter 10

By morning, the man's body had shifted back into its human form. He lay lifeless in a pool of blood.

"We need to bury him," Shane said.

"He doesn't deserve a decent burial.”

He knew that she had suffered greatly. But he felt stunned by her attitude, nonetheless.

“We have to hide the body," he said, hoping that would be a good enough reason for her to do what needed to be done.

The man had been a monster, and he deserved his fate. Shane was in absolute agreement about that fact. But the intruder was still a person who deserved to be buried and not left to be eaten by wild animals. He planned to tell someone at the appropriate moment and to make sure this all got sorted out in time. But for now, he thought it best to bury and hide the body to keep it from being eaten—and also to have control of the narrative if some hiker somehow came across this place and found a dead man lying next to his shelter.

They dug a hole using the hatchet. As he dug, he thought about what he had done. He'd killed the man who had been attacking his mate. His mouth had clamped down on her neck, and with just a bit more pressure, she would have been dead. But knowing that didn't make it any easier. And it didn't make him feel any better about what he had done.

When the body was finally buried deep enough that no wild animals would be able to smell it to dig it up, they cleaned up the pool of blood and packed up their belongings. When he had imagined leaving the campsite and heading back toward Fate Rock with his mate, this hadn't been how he had envisioned it.

When he got back home, he could ask Austin what to do. But he knew that something like this was not exactly in his big brother’s wheelhouse. But Austin was his oldest brother and the alpha of the family. If anyone could help, it was him.

They stopped on a ridge overlooking the valley they had just climbed out of. At this distance, it looked peaceful and serene in the sweet perfection of nature with all of its balance and simplicity. But the truth was that a man lay dead at Shane's own hands, and he could never take that back. There were no do-overs, no reset buttons. He would live with the shame for the rest of his life. No matter how many times he washed his hands, he could never get the blood off them.

They walked all day and into the night with headlamps on their foreheads. They'd spent most of the morning burying the body and had gotten a late start.

As they descended into Wilde Ranch, Montana began to act nervous, stopping on the trail. He was afraid she would turn and run. But finally, they made it to his house, and he unlocked the door.

The Shane that had left this house was not the Shane who had returned.
