Liked—or Respected?

So when the going gets rough and there are more demands made on you, it becomes a question of reminding yourself why you stepped into this job. This isn’t something that should be done without at least an evening’s reflection, perhaps together with your partner or a mentor you trust. I’m not trying to frighten you, but this is good advice. Figure out what motivated you to take on the job, to become a boss.

Inexplicably many bosses, far too many if you ask me, feel a need to be liked. Especially if they’ve been promoted to become the boss of their former colleagues. And who doesn’t want to be liked? Most bosses would answer be liked when asked whether they would rather be liked or be disliked by their staff. Of course, if you have to choose, we all prefer to be liked!

But such a wish can undoubtedly create more lazy employees. Think about it. If your decisions and your standpoints are governed by a concern over how your popularity is going to be affected, well, this is going to be a rather bumpy ride. You’ll back down when somebody loses their temper or shows dissatisfaction with you as a boss. If you’re afraid that people will suddenly stop talking when you enter the breakroom, then you’ve got a problem. (Hint: you’re already cut off from a lot of information about what’s happening in the group. It comes with the job.)

Some staff members will make use of that. A person who doesn’t want to bother doing a good job might get away with it. They’ll badger you with requests about everything from odd working hours to who should actually get to park closest to the entrance.

Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t have a problem with you wanting to be liked in your role as boss. But if that steers your decisions too much, you are going to have problems.

Why? Because you’re not always going to be liked. You can’t please everybody all the time. That is a fantasy and an impossible pipe dream. Forget it.
