TWENTY-FIVE

“Run!” Jason shouted as explosions shook the mine to life.

He took off alongside Naomi, both sprinting down the tunnel with everything they had. The ground trembled, making it difficult to stay on their feet as the top of the tunnel broke free. Mere seconds stretched into what felt like minutes as they pumped their arms to escape the deadly avalanche.

Seeing a large rock shake loose up ahead, Naomi took one more step, then dove, tackling into Jason from the side. The two flipped sideways from the collision, rolling onto the ground and whirling out of the way just as the massive rock slammed down beside them. They held on tight and went with their momentum, twisting and tumbling until they hit the wall beneath a support beam.

The torrent of rocks seemed to fall forever. Jason thought every successive moment would be his last—that a chunk of stone would bash against his body and break whatever bones it hit. He kept his arms wrapped around Naomi, and they tucked their heads to minimize their targets.

Soon, the shaking and thunderous pounding of boulders died off. The shaft quieted, the utter silence broken by the occasional straggling stone that couldn’t hold back gravity any longer.

Lifting and tilting his head, Jason opened his eyes. A thick veil of dust filled the dark space, making it nearly impossible to suck in a breath without using his shirt. “Are you all right?” he rasped, his mouth dry. His body ached from the fall and the rapid tumble over the rocky ground.

Naomi coughed. “Never better.”

Shifting onto his side, Jason managed to slip his right hand free. He reached for his flashlight, which was still powered on, its powerful beam shooting straight onto the ground. He grabbed his light and shimmied away from Naomi. “You know,” he said, catching his breath. “For a professional football player, you look very feminine.” He winced as he rotated and stretched his shoulder.

“Is that my thanks for returning the favor and saving your life?”

Jason stood, brushed the dirt off his pants, then offered Naomi a hand. Once she was on her feet, he said, “Thank you,” and fanned away a thick cloud of dirt hanging in the air. As it cleared, Jason aimed his light and saw that the main shaft was completely blocked by boulders. “Although, it looks like you may have only prolonged the inevitable.”

Jason stepped closer and examined the rocks. The base of the pile was close to where they’d come to a stop. Some of the bowling ball–sized stones had settled less than ten feet away. It was as close as close calls get.

“That wasn’t a natural cave-in,” Naomi said. “Those were explosives that went off.”

“Yes,” Jason agreed. “They were.”

“So, someone intentionally trapped us in here.”

“Us, along with whoever else is down here working,” Jason added. “The guy in the cell said there were more.” He shrugged. “I guess whoever’s in charge doesn’t care about them.”

He remembered the events on Haiti two days earlier, when one of the criminals had killed the guy he’d been chasing .
