7.9 Magnetic Levitation Cars
7.9.1 Concept
Airborne cars are often shown in science fiction (SF) movies . Is it possible for a car to fly through the air? An answer to this question is difficult based on current scientific knowledge. Gravity acts on all objects on the earth, and for a car to fly in the sky, the car would need to overcome this force. Although it has been conjectured that it is possible to repel gravity with an anti-gravity force, no such force has yet been discovered.
In addition to gravity, a magnetic force also acts on the Earth, since it is a massive magnet that exerts a magnetic force. Migrating birds and fish are thought to find their routes by sensing the direction of Earth’s magnetic field. Through the discovery of superconductors, we have learned that a substance that repels a magnetic field exists in the universe; a superconductor is a substance with a perfect diamagnetic force. Can we use this perfect diamagnetism to levitate cars in the air? Although we can create a repulsive force against the Earth’s magnetic field by using superconducting or electrical magnets, this magnetic field is too weak for levitation to be achieved.
The subject of this experiment is the levitation of a toy car above a superconductor. Magnetic levitation vehicles levitate using the repulsive force between a superconductor and magnets. A magnetic platform for the levitation of a toy car is created by connecting magnets. The movement of the car is dependent on the shape of the magnet used and the method of connecting the magnets used as a platform. Experiments using a variety of magnetic platforms to levitate toy cars above superconductors are described here.
