Lana Holliday frowned. There were always several of these calls at the gate every day, along with the countless phone messages and emails – all of them claiming that Doctor Extraordinary was still out there somewhere. But that phrase – very urgent urgency – had been a private joke between the two of them.

‘How urgent is the urgency?’ she used to ask Doctor Extraordinary whenever he’d come to her with some new idea for a gadget, a vehicle or an addition to his costume.

‘It’s a very urgent urgency, Holliday,’ he would reply.

As far as she was aware, nobody else knew about that. She smiled at the memory, but almost immediately her frown deepened. Odd that some kid had used the exact same phrase. But – she shook her head irritably – the kid had also said there was a ghost. It was all plainly ridiculous. Suppressing a sudden shiver down her back as she reached the bottom of the stairs, she pressed the palm of her hand on to a panel beside a set of giant metal sliding doors.

The doors glided back to reveal a dazzling sight. The enormous room reached right to the back of the main HQ building, and its rear wall was made entirely of glass. The hangar was set low down so the surface of the lake actually stretched across the giant window, about two thirds of the way down. On the right, a gleaming black-and-silver submarine bobbed in a glass tank, with doors to release it into the water.

In the very centre of the hangar was the Extra-Jet, its wings folded primly upward and the polished cockpit reflecting the bright sunlight that bounced in across the lake outside. Elsewhere, other vehicles were dotted around, some apparently ready for action, some partly dismantled for maintenance – motorbikes, sports cars and even a skidoo. But all were switched off and lifeless. No lights shone from the immaculate control panels. No purr or roar came from the freshly oiled engines. No gleam of headlights.

Lana wandered sadly among the silent machines, reaching out now and then to brush a hand against them as if they were old friends or rub away a smear with the sleeve of her jacket.

None of these vehicles had worked since the day Captain Chaos’s robot had exploded with both her and Doctor Extraordinary inside it. The Extra-Jet had been towed back to this hangar on a lorry and a cargo boat before being winched in by crane through the circular opening in the hangar roof. Because, like all the vehicles Lana Holliday had designed for the doc to use, it worked by harnessing the mysterious energy that had been released by the strange meteorite that had given him his powers. No fuel was necessary; Doctor Extraordinary simply had to grasp the joystick, and the jet’s engines would fire into life.
