Chapter 5

Logan

“You’re not welcome here!” I hear Rose shouting, and I stand from my desk and brace myself for an argument with Mrs. Bell.

I’d rather not throw an old lady out of my house, but if she came here without Rose wanting her here, I’m prepared to gently pick her up, and walk her out, if it comes to that.

Mrs. Bell isn’t in my living room though, standing around like she owns the place, feet planted on my rug with her hands on her hips.

The intruder who’s doing that is Frankie.

“Hello, Logan,” she says, her voice as cold as the prickly sensation running down my spine. “Hate what you’ve done with the place.”

“I tried to stop her,” Rose says.

“Thank you, but I can take it from here.” I stand protectively in front of my sweet, sweet Rose, part of me wishing she wasn’t here to see how angry I might get—but part of me is glad I can focus on protecting her, because if I was facing Frankie alone, it would be a lot easier for me to lose my shit, escalate everything, and let it hurt me as much as it could hurt my ex. “Get out of my house or I’ll call the police.”

Frankie cackles at the warning. "Go for it, and we'll see who ends up in the back of a patrol car."

"I'm a witness to everything happening here—and I won't let you get away with lying to the police," Rose pipes in from behind me. "The cops around here would trust me a lot more than you. I've grown up with their kids. So you can stop making stupid threats like that."

Fuck me. When Rose talks that way, I feel like I could be stupid enough to fall in love again.

And when I let myself think about it for longer than a second, I worry I'll have to admit I already have.

“This is between Logan and me,” Frankie says. “Why don’t you run along and play with your toys, kid. Or has he not bought you any yet?” When Rose says nothing Frankie smirks. “Oh, I guess you’re not that special to him. My mistake. I thought you mattered, after your grandmother called me crying, saying you’d moved in with him, but you really are just babysitting.”

“Enough!” I roar, picking her up and carrying her out back.

“What the hell are you doing?” she cries. “You can’t touch me.”

“You’re a trespasser,” I growl in her face, setting her down, “I can do what I want with you. Be glad I was gentle, and get the hell off my property.”

“I came here to try and make amends, you bastard,” she huffs, leaning into my personal space as much as I’m leaning into hers.

At one point in my life, having her this close would've done it for me, but now it makes my skin crawl. “You have a funny way of showing it.”
