Chapter 9: The Mulberry Tree
While Trevor had his cool and collected Swiss father, there was another man in his life in the form of Able, his stepfather. If Robert was a source of comfort and affection, Able was a source of terror and abuse for him. However, in the beginning Trevor didnât want him as a stepfather. He knew there was something very sinister about Able as per his African name meant âBe Afraidâ.
He hadnât confirmed the truth about it until the incident at the Mulberry Tree.
He was bullied by a bunch of kids there and was pelted with berries. He went home and his mother was worried in the beginning. When she realized that what he was on him was just berry juice, she teased him. However, when Able came, Trevor got provoked him to help him out. Despite his mother defusing the situation, he felt that he could get revenge with the help of Able.
They drove to the tree and he pointed out the children. The kids saw him and Able come out of the car and they ran off in all directions. Able caught the one who knocked Trevor down and hit him first and took out Trevorâs revenge. After a few minutes, he felt like Able had gone too far. He got an apology from the kid and Trevor felt like he was apologizing for everything he has ever done wrong in his life. It felt good for him in the beginning but also traumatized him. It confirmed that Able was someone who was very scary and dangerous.
When they got back, the father of the boy that Able beat up came to their house but faced an even more dangerous drunk Able. Trevor couldnât look away and saw the man get hit and then barely escape with his life.
Apart from this event at the tree, Trevor related the reasons why even if he was in a colored community, he was still playing alone and not liked by the colored kids. The government made sure that the different categories didnât get along and the whites were also in constant fear of being demoted. Regardless of your current registration, you could apply to be white if you are colored and was able to marry whiter individuals. The white people could get a kid labeled colored and there would need to be a major change in their lives. The mother would get registered as colored along with the child and the father would stay white in order for them to earn money for the family. This kind of situation was common and many colored children grew to be more prejudiced against the blacks because of the brainwashing
that they got from the government. The apartheid worked in a way that they government said that colored didnât become whites because the blacks might find a loophole and abuse the system.
Apart from the bullying, Trevor often got lynched by the kids because of his wish to make friends. He was often got duped and his cousin had to help him.
