Chapter Twenty Six
Glazov turned away from the window, unbuttoned his suit coat and sat behind his desk. With the discipline that came from a lifetime of compartmentalizing all aspects of his life, he set aside thoughts of his wife, entrusting her and his sister to the care of his guards, and focused on the matter at hand.
âWho do you think theyâre working with?â Novak asked as he toyed with the Russian coin he always kept with him.
Glazov tracked the coinâs gravity-defying progress through Novakâs fingertips and allowed himself a long-suffering sigh. Once upon a time, he had considered hijacking the damn thing and holding it hostage just to fuck with his cousinâs head. But Glazov knew the story behind the coin. They didnât discuss it, but he didnât doubt that if Novak thought a guard had taken it, heâd be on the warpath until it was returned safe and sound. Blood would be spilled. Novak could be a real freak when the mood hit him.
But Novakâs favorite toy was of concern to Glazov on a more pragmatic level. He knew better than anyone that Novak was fucking brilliant; his brain was always working overtime. Handling the coin served as a sort of mental white noise for Novak, helping him rein in his darker impulses. That was all well and good, but Glazov knew an enemy might perceive it as a weakness or a âtellâ. Novak usually indulged the odd habit in Glazovâs office during strategy sessions. That suited Glazov, as there was no need for their enemies to have access to such personal insight about his righthand man. Of course, this meant the coin had become a constant companion during their meetings.
Glazov slowly tapped his finger on the arm of his chair and let out a long, slow breath. âIâve had time to think about it. These kids arenât important enough to have high-ranking contacts. Theyâre just street kids. Iâm beginning to think it isnât one of our own people undermining us to buy those guns. Think about it. If it were one of ours, weâd know. But there have been no rumors of unrest, no gossip, and no signs of mutiny. These are the kinds of undercurrents one can sense in the atmosphere as theyâre happening.â
âWhat do you want to do? Wait and see who tries to buy some guns?â
Glazov felt a twinge of irritation at his cousinâs joke. It was Novakâs nature to go for a little levity, but still... Glazov was determined to make Novak see his perspective on the evolving situation with the guns, even though he knew heâd probably regret trying. Novak was, after all, incorrigible.
âDo you not believe that, as leaders of our people, we should possess the ability to walk into a room and read the intentions of the people in it? I do. Ask any woman about intuition and theyâll tell you; they can sense animosity and danger with no proofâonly a knowing. But in answer to your question, yeah, Iâm going to do whatâs necessary to find out whoâs dealing guns in my territory.
