I wonder what my therapist will make of this new first chapter. My best friend dies and then I write something about two people who won’t age, who will stay the same as they were in that one perfect moment where they conceived their child. A child who is forced to grow up, move on, go beyond a place the other two people in his life could ever have imagined.

And then there’s that love-story element. Why did that come up? Apparently I’m engaged now. Secretly. It seems insensitive to share the news with anyone, on account of Mike’s untimely yet deliberate demise.

The sex has been great all weekend. And it has certainly served as a welcome distraction to Suicide Thursday, but the plan was to end things with Jackie. Mike’s death was showing me how to end things.

Quit my job.

Write a second chapter.

Get to the end of a book.

Dump Jackie.
