One week later
“ W
hat the hell is going on?” I muttered to myself as I looked at the mess of the Internet reviews which had somehow turned from something wholly negative in to a much more positive experience. And not just because there was a whole bunch of new nice things written about me, but because a lot of the negative ones had gone as well. It was almost as if the marketing company which started the hate campaign against me had changed its mind for some reason. But Lara, the Instagram influencer who started all of this, still despised me, I only had to see her social media accounts for that, so why had the other reviews started to fall away? “I don’t get it.”
“Well, I wouldn’t complain about it,” Samantha laughed. “That’s great news, don’t you think? It means that the hard slump you have been through might be coming to an end. It means you might even win hat bakery award you go in for every year. Since you av been through ups and downs, they might reward you.”
“I’m not going in for any award this year. No way,” I insisted. “There is no way that I will win anything after what’s happened. And just because the reviews are going it doesn’t mean that mud won’t stick. People will still think badly of me, probably for a very long time. It will just be an utter embarrassment to even try.”
“But an award can be the thing to help restart things, don’t you think?” Samantha smiled at me. “If I were you, I would think it better to at least give it a try. It’s something to think about anyway.”
Hmm, right now I could only hope for the end of my ordeal. I wasn’t looking too much in to the future and thinking about anything other than what was going on right now. Maybe I would think about an award at some point but for now, I just wanted the bad reviews to keep on vanishing. That was all I could hope for.
“Anyway, I better get out of here,” Samantha declared with a smile. “You have your date soon, don’t you? And I have, you know, a date of my own and I don’t want to be late for it…”
It was still a little awkward between us, talking about our love lives, I didn’t much want to hear about her and Gary because I wasn’t ever going to like it, which meant I kept a lot of details about my relationship a secret as well. But as long as we kept things superficial like this then everything was fine. I was hoping that soon enough we could get to a place where it wouldn’t be weird anymore but that would take time.
“Right, well I will see you very soon then.” I grinned at my friend. “Have a good night.”
“You too.” She shot me a wink. “And don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. Not that it leaves much.”
After Samantha left, I set about shutting up shop, cleaning the bakery and getting it ready for the morning.
