Footnotes

Let us recall that the brahmanarepresents the contemplative and sacerdotal mentality; the kshatriya the active, combative, dynamic, noble, and heroic mentality; and the vaishya the mercantile or artisanal mentality, or that of the peasant in certain cases, thevaishya mentality being “horizontal” in a certain sense. As for the shudra, he is a materialist by nature; his virtue is obedience.

The idea that man can attain knowledge (jnana) through action (karma)—an idea Vedantists reject—is fairly common in average Sufism, knowledge being in practice confused in this case with salvation pure and simple.
