Chapter 29
âWeâre at the Riverâ
May 24, 2127
Day 236
Jacks Company
âWeâre at the river, Command,â said Luka Terranova reported; squad Seven had the forward scouting duty. With the squad were Lieutenant Miranda Balestiere and Sergeant Mari Santos.
âHow does it look, Luka?â Molly Pickford asked.
âWell, it should be easy to cross if we can get to it,â she said ominously.
âWhatâs the problem?â Cassidy asked.
âWeâre at the edge of a cliff fifty feet up.â
He snorted, âOh, good. Whatâs it like on the other side?â
âLower. A few trees, small ones. The waterâs moving faster than I realized at first. Baylee says she wouldnât want to try swimming it.â
âOkay, hang tight. Weâll be there soon. Send the ATVs back, the others will come to you, drop their passengers then come back for more.â
âYes, Commander. Right away!â
###
It was mid-afternoon and Jacks Company had caught up with the forward scouts. Gabi Tomei consulted the terrain map on her data pad then told Cassidy and Pickford, âIâm pretty sure weâre right here,â she pointed to the river on the map. âThe first rendezvous point, âThe Crackâ, should be about 5 miles ahead.â
They stood at the top of a bluff 50 feet above the river searching the rugged countryside ahead. There were some hills on the other side they would have to go around before they reached the rendezvous site but first they had to get across the river below them.
When Cassidy and the rest of Jacks Company arrived at the overlook above the river heâd stood with his hands on his hips looking down at the lower countryside on the other side of the river and sighed dispiritedly. The river below was only about twenty-five feet wide but as Luka had said it was running very fast and the land below was fifty lower than theyâd expected. Somewhere far to the northwest this river would join one of the upper tributaries that fed the Clearwater River or perhaps it ran northeast and would eventually join one of the rivers that fed Lake Chun. That didnât really matter, what did matter was getting some people across and on to the rendezvous point where they hoped that Guy Gilbert and the others should be waiting for them.
Rick was hungry and tired, they all were. The last of their food had run out days ago and even before that theyâd all been on reduced rations, and that was before theyâd picked up the Australians who also hadnât had anything to eat for days before being rescued by the Jackies. Some of the rescued were too weak to stand much less walk. Veronika Tchachenko had figured that theyâd almost had enough to make it to the rendezvous point before they rescued the 34 captive Rangers and civilians from the aliens and then the Australians had added an extra 39 empty stomachs that needed to be fed so they could go on and now they were completely out. The tau-boar meat that had been cooked at the camp where theyâd abandoned the powered down
