Chapter thirty-five

Sophie sat in front of her laptop with a glass of wine. The police had handed it back quite promptly. Hopefully they hadn’t installed anything on it. She scrolled through the profiles, looking for one that would make her want to click. It was a big decision, after all. She couldn’t afford a mistake.

Andrew: ‘The most important thing for me is helping other people.’ Yeah, right.

Aidan: ‘I come from a big family and I love children.’ Well, maybe.

Chris: ‘I was in the rowing team at university and I enjoy cycling and rock climbing. I’m training for my first triathlon.’ That’s the one she should go with, but something stayed her hand. Maybe he’s just a bit too satisfied with himself.

But she’s not looking for a life partner here, she reminded herself.

Damian: ‘I have a math degree from MIT and I’ve set up my own software company.’ Of course. The brains. That was important too. Brainpower was very sexy, no doubt about it, and she could probably have lots of interesting conversations with this guy, but, realistically, quite aside from the fact that he was in the US, that was never going to happen. Don’t get seduced by the brains.

‘I play piano and acoustic guitar and I’m learning to write music.’ Sweet. A musical one.

But really, whoever this guy was, she’d be using him and discarding him. There was never going to be any future in it. Maybe what she should really look for is someone that’s good in a fight, that would be a good bit of futureproofing. But none of them said that.

‘I learned boxing in the army and I’m happy to beat up anybody. Particularly enjoy Saturday night brawls and cage fighting.’

That might have intrigued her, sparked her interest. Better than all this Mr Nice Guy stuff. Because the Mr Nice Guys were often not so nice when the going got rough. She knew that. And some of these urbane, sophisticated types could become downright creepy when it suited them. She knew that even better.

That young policeman, DC Wilcox. He looked like a nice guy. The sort of guy she could arm wrestle to the ground. The sort of guy that would be no use to her. No use at all.
