Chapter 9
âPeople can be lovers and enemies at the same time, you know.â - Willa Cather
The fact that Alfred stood there shouldnât have shocked me. Yet, Iâd believed Rogue when he said none of them had been here. That he hadnât told them how to find me. Iâd let myself believe he meant it when he said he wanted to help me.
âNo fierce words for me, Hellion?â Alfred the Asshole asked as he straightened and began to stroll toward me.
There were any number of answers I could offer him. None I was willing to give though. I just stared at him and kept my gaze off of Rogue.
âAlfred,â Rogue began, but he didnât finish the sentence or add anything more. Asshole pinned him with a single, unreadable look.
Irritation flared through me. âWhy are you here?â If anyone got to demand an answer, it would be me. âWhy donât you go find Eleanor? Iâm sure she would be more than happy to keep you company. Based on the sheer number at the party, I donât doubt you could have a wealth of companionship. Why me?â
Eyebrow quirked, Asshole stared at me with those enigmatic eyes. âYou belong to us.â Like that answered everything.
I snorted. âI belong to no one.â
âYou solve nothing by running.â
âYou presume I want to solve something.â I really didnât. All I wanted to do now was leave. If he was going to be here, the chance of successfully fleeing and evading them both was nonexistent. I would simply have to bide my time. Again.
But I didnât have to stay here and talk to him. I turned away, but he caught my arm and tugged me back to him. âHellion,â he said. âWhy are you angry with me?â
âAre you for fucking real right now?â The burn in my veins turned to acid. Still refusing to look at him, I fixed my glare on the house. It was a really nice house. It hadnât done anything wrong, but better to stare at it than him.
âVery,â he murmured, his voice dark like it had been dipped in chocolate and danger. He stroked his hands up and down my arms. âTell me why you are angry. You abandoned the party and fled before you could be presented. I understand you wanted to insult me. Message delivered. I forgive youâ¦â
The acid eating away at my insides caught fire, and I wrenched myself out of his grip. Well, to be honest, I did try to wrench myself out of his grip. One of the things Iâd learned over the last few weeks of freedom was that my strength and speed had increased infinitely. So not only did I know how to fight, I could seriously back it up.
Score one point for being a badass.
Didnât matter a damn against any one of them. They were faster. They were stronger. It sucked.
âYou forgive me.â While I didnât growl, I did grit out each word through clenched teeth.
âYes,â Asshole told me. Definitely Asshole. So much Asshole. âYou are still acclimatizing, so running is normal.
