Thus it is for me as well. If the personas I adopt in each of my essays are not me in my entirety, at least they are not false to me. As I often tell my students, your written voice should not be exactly your spoken voice, with all its ums and ers and pauses and restarts, but it should be you revised and refined, not past your self but to your best self; it should be a voice you are comfortable reading aloud. When I gave my first public reading ever, at Brigham Young University during my last semester as a master’s student, my friends approached me afterward to compliment, “You sound just like you.” Years later, another friend said that when he read my book, “it was like having me in the room conversing with him.”
