By drawing with different instruments—a sharp or a dull pencil, markers of different sizes, a broad stick of chalk, compressed charcoal, wide vine charcoal, waxy crayon, oil stick, lithography crayon, pen and ink, and brush and pigment—with rapid movements, the artist can discover an expressive vocabulary.

Although gesture drawing is associated with the live model, an artist can draw a coffee pot, a cup and saucer, the breakfast dishes, a bouquet of flowers, a companion reading the paper or watching TV, a pile of dirty laundry, or a sleeping pet or tigers, as Delacroix did in Figure 7.4.
