Charlie drank his beer and stared at the condensation on the table, ears listening for any sign of trouble over the noise of some boy band blaring over the sound system. A man in too-small tighty-whities shook his backside in Emma’s face as she stuffed bills into his waistband. Every now and then, he flipped his long hair, whacking Charlie with it.

He despised this place. When he died and went to hell for his crimes, he was coming back here, living out eternity in a crowded club packed with drunk women stuffing dollar bills down men’s drawers to the sounds of pop music played through tinny speakers and by the light of purple-and-pink spots hitting a disco ball. He would spend every moment of it dreading Vince’s entrance, knowing what he’d have to watch when Vince got onstage, and yet unable to leave because the fear of Vince in danger was stronger than the sickness this place inspired.

To top it off, the dancers all knew who he was. It was the best explanation for why every one of them so far had managed to jostle his seat, attack him with hair, or worse, make him the butt of a joke, rubbing their hands over his head, grinding against his side, or otherwise turning him into the hilarious man-on-man action of their number. It was like Vince had said, “The redhead in the front is my ex. He hates attention. Have fun!”

He’d bet his antique plane collection that was exactly what had happened.

Cash added more blood to Charlie’s beer from a flask he carried. He’d been keeping watch on the foyer until a moment ago, which meant Rhi had texted him that Vince’s number was up. Rhi, as an employee, was the only one allowed in the dressing room, so she was stationed there. Javi had her usual place at the back of the club in the sound booth. Nikolai, who refused to come in, was patrolling the back door. The rest of them—Galswinth, Emma, and Charlie—were inside the club itself. Somebody had eyes on Vince at all times, and somebody had eyes on every entrance to the club. It was as good as they could get, but still Charlie couldn’t chase the fear churning in his stomach that something would go horribly wrong.

“LongHorns is a terrible name for a club,” Cash commented, drinking straight from his flask. “Or am I just not gay enough?”

Galswinth snickered. “I think the name is humorous. Surely they weren’t intending it to be taken seriously?”

“Nah. It’s dorkilicious,” Emma answered, spanking the man in front of her as he headed off. She was having a grand old time making every dancer’s night with her generosity. If she had a type, Charlie had yet to figure it out. She gave equally to black, white, tall, short, long-haired, crew cut, punk, and boy-next-door. The dancers had figured that out too, and everyone made the financially astute decision of visiting her at least once. It also gave them more opportunity to make Charlie’s life hell.
