which parts poison

Years before she moved to Idaho, Coco’s biological mother lived near an open pit copper mine. When the mine stopped yielding copper, it was shut down, abandoned, and it filled with rainwater so acidic nothing could live in it or near it, no fish in the water, no plants along its shore. Its runoff turned a nearby river red. If you were to drink this water, it would kill you, corroding your body from the inside out. Sometimes, a fog hovers above the water, a mist, and residents of the town worry it is poisonous, though it can’t be contained. When birds are migrating, people stay close to the pit, shoot fireworks, shoot guns, fly drones, all to try to scare the birds, to make them land somewhere else, or to encourage them to leave the pit as soon as possible after a short rest, but it doesn’t always work. One November, thousands of migrating snow geese stopped to rest at the mine, some staying for more than a week, and several thousand of them died. Hunters who killed geese anywhere near the mine around that time were warned to process and freeze the birds, but not to eat them until tests determined which parts of the birds were edible and which parts poison.
