We strolled down the steps at Chelsea Town Hall in a legally recognized companionship for the first time on February 15, 2013, followed by a drive to East London in a vintage double-decker bus. We had our reception in an actual crypt (where, fittingly, King Henry VIII once held a three-day wedding banquet). It was entirely candlelit and beautiful. We ate rustic French food and drank our body weight in Champagne before, as all British parties do, it exploded into a shoes-off, raging dance party. Hanalei is still my hero. It was an absolute blast.

The twins and their families were at all three weddings. Baby Josephine, Phil and Tiff’s daughter, was our only baby then. She was too little to be a flower girl, but she was pointing the way forward for all of us in those days. The love and support we received from the Hanseroths could only be described as unconditional family love.

When you are told your whole life that it’s wrong for two women or two men to marry, when your homeland agrees and when you realize that you believe it, too, deep within your primitive senses, a reckoning is imperative. It is a process but it’s mandatory whether you’re LGBTQ or not. A person’s self-worth is dictated by what inalienable rights are allowed to them. The right to not live your life alone is a big one. If your family can accept you, if they want to celebrate your life and bear witness to your solemn vow, you’ll have as many weddings as you need to.
