Chapter 6
Harlem blues
âRISE AND SHINE, lazy-bones! Itâs after ten!â
Joseph looked up and saw her cheerful puppy-like face smiling down at him. He had half a notion to feel her nose to see if it were moist. âYou always did wake up happy,â he said. âI never understood how you could do it.â
âThereâs coffee for you on the table,â she sang. âItâs hot now, but I canât guarantee it will be for long. I also have a surprise for you.â
He sat up and rubbed his head. The world was always a blur when he awoke whether it was just the breaking of dawn or late in the afternoon. âA surprise?â And then he remembered the other day. âPlease, no surprises,â he groaned.
âOK,â she said. âThen Iâll just send the bagels and lox back to the deli.â
âWait,â he said. âLetâs not be too hasty . . .â
Bagels, lox, and the New York Times. Thatâs what dreams of the Big Apple were made of. The bagels were slightly stale, the lox was a bit too salty, and the Times still gloried in its liberal dilemma of guilt and pretense of objectivity. But still, it had some substance and it tasted good to boot.
âWhat are your plans for today?â she asked him.
âNo plans,â he said, âand few aspirations . . .â
âHow long are you staying?â She was dressed in a colorful smock. And she wore a pink beret jauntily pulled down on one side of her head.
âI donât know,â he said. And then he looked over at her. âAm I in your way?â
She shook her head. âNo. Stay as long as you want. If you can put up with me, I can put up with you.â
He laughed. âItâs come to that, has it?â
She came over and kissed him. âIâm glad youâre here. Really. Take this extra key. That way you can let yourself in if Iâm not around.
âThanks.â
âIâm going back to work,â she said. âJust help yourself to anything . . .â And then she went over to her painting area and closed the curtains.
Joseph read the paper, drank his coffee and ate his bagel, and when he was done he took out his address book and pondered the notation he had made next to the name âCarmen Jones - Harlem Booksâ. Then he went over to the telephone and dialled the number.
âHarlem Books,â said a male voice.
âYes, Iâd like to speak to Ms Jones, please.â
âWho is this?â
âJoseph Radkin.â
There was a brief pause and then another voice came on the line. âYes?â
âAm I speaking with Carmen Jones?â
âYou would have been if this were ten years ago. Youâre speaking with Shanti now. Who are you?â
âMy nameâs Joseph Radkin. Iâm trying to find the daughter of Zachariah Jones.â
âWhat do you want?â
âI want to talk with her. Was he your father?â
âWhat do you want to talk about?â
âMy Dad sailed with Captain Zac during the war. Iâm doing some research about that period and . . .â
The voice cut him off. âMy father wrote a little book about his life.
