“Geo, wake up.”

Someone shook her shoulder. Regina? Aliyah?

“Geo, I gotta go. The kids ...”

Nora.

“What time is it?”

“Five a.m.”

She rubbed her eyes. “The kids wake up at five?”

“James has been up before six every morning of his life, and I’m not sure he’ll be happy when he realizes he’s still at his dad’s. If he wants to come home and I’m not there for him …”

The anguish in her voice forced Geo out of her stupor. “Got it. I understand.”

“Do you?” Nora asked. “Really?”

She sat up and met her hazel eyes, reading so many emotions underlying the questions.

“I do,” she said seriously. She’d understood all along, probably much better than Nora could have. Now she just had to pull herself together to do what they both needed. “I’ve got you. I’ll take care of this.”

In seconds she was dressed and had collected Nora’s shirt, bra, and strappy sandals from the floor in the lobby. She was waiting for her with them as Nora emerged from the bathroom, her hair and skirt back in place.

“Here you go.”

“Thank you,” she said gratefully, then grimaced. “I can’t believe I’m doing the walk of shame home to my kids.”

“Hey,” she said softly as she caught one arm that’d just come through a spaghetti strap.

Nora finished pulling the tank top over her head and met her eyes. “What?”

“I’m not ashamed of what we did last night. I hope you’re not either.”

Everything about her features softened immediately. “No. You’re right. I’m not ashamed. Last night was an eye-opener for me. And just because I’m going back into mom mode doesn’t mean I have to close them again.”

“Good.” She smiled. “Then let’s get you home.”

They rode in quiet as the sun tinged the horizon pink. She pulled to a stop outside the cute apartment complex a few miles inland from her own place and killed the engine.

Nora turned to her. “I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything.”

“But I want to, because you were amazing. Last night, and this morning. And I know we said no strings and no pressure, but …”

Geo’s heart gave a painful lurch at that ‘but.’

“But, I’m never going to forget this. Every time I see you or think of you, I’m going to remember how you made me feel like a woman again, and I’m going to know that’s possible, that it’s real. I’m still here under the diaper changes and the board books and the footie pajamas. I’m not gone. I’m not done.”

That might not have been a happily ever after, but it was a damn fine parting gift. “Thank you. That’s perfect.”

Nora sighed heavily. “Okay. I’ll trust you, and I’m going to let you go get some rest.”

“I hope you get some, too.”

Nora laughed in a way that made Geo suspect that wasn’t much of a possibility, but her smile as she got out of the car also suggested she’d be just fine.

She waited until Nora made it inside, then fired up the engine and turned toward the studio.
